Project overview

Earlier in 2024, we had an exciting collaboration with Meerabel - a free app that's transforming how we tackle photo clutter on our phones and servers!

Over two months, we analyzed their existing product and implemented strategic gamification elements that make digital decluttering actually enjoyable. We created visual metrics so users can see their ecological impact in real-time, providing that satisfying feedback loop that keeps people engaged.

Beyond immediate improvements, we built a flexible framework that can evolve alongside user needs and behaviors. The result? A decluttering experience that feels less like a chore and more like progress.

Earlier in 2024, we wrapped up an exciting partnership with Screengolfers – helping them connect screen golf enthusiasts worldwide with a brand new responsive website!

We focused on creating an intuitive design that puts their blog content and search functionality front and center, making it easy for users to find exactly what they're looking for. Every element was carefully crafted to work flawlessly across devices, from desktop to mobile.

The result? A digital platform that makes screen golf more accessible and engaging for players everywhere. Check out www.screengolfers.com to see how thoughtful design can transform a digital experience.

Pain Point

The user doesn’t know how long it will take to complete their course. They lack an overview of what is left to do. No feedback on how good they are performing. Impossible to get back to an exercise

User Research

User interviews surfaced 3 friction points:

Too many photos, too overwhelming.
No clear starting point or sense of how long cleanup would take.
The environmental impact? Unclear and easy to ignore

Our personas helped us zoom in on what really mattered:
- Camille needs speed and safety—she's terrified of losing memories.
- Adrien manages massive photo libraries and needs control + clarity.
- Léa has zero time for manual sorting and is constantly running out of storage.

We focused on three things:
- Show the real environmental upside of freeing up storage.
- Build a stronger connection between users and their AI assistant.
- Create feedback loops that actually motivate people to keep going.
- The droïds were rigged so we could animate them within Unity, and create more interactions.

Coaches were overwhelmed by fragmented trainee data, making it difficult to identify who was falling behind or what administrative tasks required immediate attention.

Make cleanup feel rewarding, not like a chore. Use structured gamification to bring users back more often, and help them feel progress, agency, and impact.

Gamification

We built a gamification framework tailored to Meerabel's needs:

- Mind-mapped every possible engagement mechanic.
- Filtered down to what aligned with user needs and technical reality.
- Studied how games use progression, rewards, and feedback loops, then adapted those systems for UX.

We workshopped everything with the founders to align on vision, priority, and feasibility before moving into prototyping.

Strategy

We started by mapping the full current flow—every screen, every decision point. This let us:
- Spot where gamification could add real value.
- Design transversal features like points and progress tracking.
- Stage rollout in a way that wouldn't break what's already working.

The result: a feature roadmap that layers in game mechanics without disrupting the existing architecture.

UX Design

We extracted key sections of the existing user journey and reimagined them with gamification baked in.

The goal wasn't to reinvent everything, just to show how points, progress tracking, and rewards could fit naturally into the experience.

This gave the dev team something concrete to react to: they could see the scope, flag anything too heavy to build, and push back on features that didn't align with the current architecture.

It kept the conversation grounded and collaborative instead of theoretical.

Visual Design

We translated the strategy into early visual concepts:
Screens for points, rewards, and progress.
Design language borrowed from gaming—but adapted to Meerabel's aesthetic.
Depth and polish, within the limits of the current design system.

Coaches were overwhelmed by fragmented trainee data, making it difficult to identify who was falling behind or what administrative tasks required immediate attention.

The goal: elevate the experience without ballooning scope or timeline.

Impact

We designed a more engaging interface to highlight the environmental benefits of photo cleanup—making the impact feel real, not abstract. Users can choose which metrics matter most to them, whether that's CO2 saved, storage freed up, or energy reduced.

Rewards & Points

We built a hub where users can track their points and see what they unlock—coupons, offers, perks. They can also preview what's coming next to stay motivated. A weekly leaderboard adds friendly competition, and sorting photos unlocks "Meers”, collectible points that tie directly to rewards.

Gallery

We explored visual concepts for an AI-curated gallery to help users understand that their photos are already pre-classified by the system. This makes the sorting task feel purposeful, since each action helps refine the AI. We also proposed filter options, such as tag-based views, to give users more control and clarity when navigating their image library.

Next Steps

The product owners were not yet ready to implement the new features, since their team was focused on other priorities.

If these directions were to move forward, the next steps would be to build a functional prototype to validate the flow, interaction timing, and reward clarity.

We would then run user tests to measure session length, daily activity, and retention, and collect early feedback to refine the system.

Once validated, the final phase would include preparing the complete UI kit, documenting the full gamification logic, and delivering development ready files for a smooth integration into the existing app.
